WASHINGTON—
The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved the first generic version of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra to treat high blood pressure in adults, but the FDA has not yet approved the generic version for that purpose.
The FDA also approved the first generic version of the drug, which is the same drug as Lipitor, to treat high blood pressure in adults, but the company has not yet approved the generic version for that purpose.
But the FDA had been waiting for the approval of the generic version of Viagra for nearly a year.
“We are very pleased with the approval of Viagra for patients who may not be able to use the drug and whose blood pressure is not being adequately controlled,” said Dr. John R. Koeppel of San Diego, Calif., who led the approval process.
“We hope that the agency will take immediate action to make Viagra available to patients who are unable to take it,” he added.
Erectile dysfunction is the inability to get or maintain an erection that is firm enough for sexual intercourse. It can cause problems like diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease. If you or a loved one has erection problems that interfere with their sex life or relationships, talk to your doctor about getting a generic version of Viagra or other similar medicines.
But Koeppel said many patients who have erectile dysfunction are willing to take the drug. “This is a big pharmaceutical company,” he said. “We are seeing people who are taking this and they are willing to take the drug.”
Viagra is currently the only FDA-approved treatment for erectile dysfunction. The drug is available for use by men and women only.
But Koeppel said the agency is not taking any action against the drug companies that make the generic version, and has not issued any public statements about its use in the United States.
The company is continuing to market its products, which are sold in more than 20 countries and have been approved by the FDA in a generic form by the end of this year. But Koeppel said the FDA has not approved the generic version in this area.
Koeppel said the company is also considering a generic version of Viagra, but that the company is not planning to market the generic version in the United States. Viagra and its generic equivalents are available through pharmacies in countries outside the U. S.
